The Five Elements

For centuries, Chinese philosophy has organized the natural world into five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each carries its own temperament, its own quiet energy.

We've drawn on this old framework to choose the stones behind every KANSHO collar — not as a promise of what a stone can do, but as an invitation: a small, thoughtful way of noticing the character in the companion beside you.

Wood

Wood is the element of growth — new shoots, early spring, the pull toward what's next.

A quiet match for: the curious ones. The companions who investigate every open door, every rustle in the grass — always a little ahead of you, always looking forward.

◆ Green Aventurine · A soft, dappled green stone traditionally associated with renewal and gentle beginnings.

Earth

Earth is the element of steadiness — the ground beneath everything else, unhurried and sure.

A quiet match for: the steady ones. The companions who nap in the same patch of sun each afternoon, content simply to be near you.

◆ Tiger's Eye · A warm, golden-banded stone traditionally symbolizing grounded confidence — one that holds its center.

Fire

Fire is warmth made visible — expressive, spirited, unafraid to take up space.

A quiet match for: the bold ones. The companions who greet you at the door like it's an occasion, who love loudly and without restraint.

◆ Amethyst · A deep violet stone long linked to passion and vivid presence — one that doesn't sit quietly in a room.

Metal

Metal is the element of clarity — precise, composed, quietly dignified.

A quiet match for: the composed ones. The companions who observe before they act, who carry themselves with a certain reserve.

◆ Clear Quartz · Traditionally regarded as the most refined of stones, prized for its transparency and understated elegance.

Water

Water is the element of depth — still on the surface, layered underneath.

A quiet match for: the gentle ones. The companions who watch from the windowsill, who take their time to trust, and mean it fully when they do.

◆ Obsidian · A deep, glassy black stone long associated with introspection and quiet protection — one that watches more than it speaks.

The Four Guardians

Long before compasses, the sky itself was a map. Four directions, each held by a guardian — dragon in the east, bird in the south, tiger in the west, tortoise in the north. Together they marked where the sun rose and set, where the seasons turned.

Four Guardians borrows this older way of reading direction. Each collar carries a stone chosen not to predict your companion's nature, but to mark a point on that same old map — the direction they face when they sleep by the window, the season they came into your life, or simply the guardian you find yourself drawn to.

Guardian of the East — Amazonite

Traditionally associated with: calm, clarity, balance.

A stone the color of shallow water. Amazonite has long been linked to a settled mind — worn, in tradition, to soften tension and restore a sense of ease. Its blue-green tone echoes the East, the direction of new growth in Chinese cosmology.

Guardian of the South — Red Jasper

Traditionally associated with: warmth, endurance, groundedness.

Red Jasper carries the color of sun-baked clay, said to hold the steadiness of earth touched by fire. In tradition, it has been worn as a symbol of quiet strength and resilience — a stone for those who endure rather than flare. Its deep, matte tone reflects the South, the direction of fire and summer.

Guardian of the West — Labradorite

Traditionally associated with: strength, protection, intuition.

Labradorite shifts color as the light moves across it — flashes of blue and grey beneath a stone that otherwise looks plain. Traditionally worn as a protective stone, believed to shield its wearer while sharpening awareness. Its cool, metallic tone reflects the West, the direction of autumn and quiet strength.

Guardian of the North — Lapis Lazuli

Traditionally associated with: wisdom, depth, truth.

Lapis Lazuli has been prized for millennia — ground into pigment for ancient art, carved for royalty, worn as a stone of insight. Its deep blue, flecked with gold, has long been associated with introspection and inner clarity. Its dark tone reflects the North, the direction of winter and stillness.
