Long before compasses, four guardians watched the sky — Azure Dragon in the east, Vermilion Bird in the south, White Tiger in the west, Black Tortoise in the north. In Chinese mythology, they didn't just mark direction. They kept watch over it, each one standing guard through its own season, its own hour.
Every companion faces some direction, even at rest. Toward the window. Toward the door. Toward wherever you last left the room.
The Four Guardians stand alongside the five elements — not to describe a creature's nature, but to choose what watches over it. Amazonite carries the cool of shallow water, called on for the east. Sunstone, the warmth of late afternoon, for the south. Labradorite, a flash caught only at an angle, for the west. Lapis Lazuli, the stillness of things kept close, for the north.
A collar, chosen the way you'd choose a direction to face — the one you want standing between them and whatever the night holds.
